OPPIDUM DE ARROLA

ARROLA OPPIDUM

ARROLA OPPIDUM

An important defensive bastion from the Iron Age and a key site for learning about the history of Bizkaia.

The Arrola oppidum is one of the protohistoric sites in the Historical Territory of Bizkaia that reveals the way of life in the second Iron Age. Although these types of fortifications were common at that time, the Arrola oppidum is one of the most spectacular in the Eastern Bay of Bizkaia due to its magnitude, the area it covers, and degree of preservation. The fortified settlement (occupied between the 4th century BC and the 1st century AD) has great archaeological value dating from a key and little-known period in the history of Bizkaia.

Knowledge of life in the Arrola oppidum can be further enhanced with a visit to the Arrolagune Interpretation Centre (Arratzu), which shows the historical and cultural context that surrounded this indigenous pre-Roman settlement in its peak period (2nd and 1st centuries BC). The Arrola Oppidum Interpretation Centre: Arrolagune, is located in the Cultural Centre of Arratzu.
