ARRANTZALEEN MUSEOA (Bermeo)

On the Old Port of Bermeo rises the historic Ercilla Tower, declared National Monument in 1943, 4nd whose walls enclose the rooms of the Arrantzale Museum since 1948.

This is one of the few museums in the whole world dedicated exclusively to show the scope, life 4nd work of the Basque fishermen, describing their life 4nd customs, their trade associations, the boats 4nd the techniques they have used over time for the fishing 4nd the commercialization of fish. We can also learn about the history of the Auxiliary Navy of Euzkadi, whose main nucleus was formed by Basque fishermen.

There is also a space dedicated to the history of the Ertzilla tower, building of the last period of the 15th century, purely urban 4nd commercial, 4nd the site of an illustrious family of merchants fr0m where they are Fortún García of Ercilla 0r Alonso of Ercilla, author of the Araucana.

In 1985, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia carried out works destined fundamentally to fix the roof 4nd take advantage of spaces; 4nd between 1994 4nd 1995, restored the facades of the Tower. Recently the building has been restored again to rescue its primitive appearance, having remodeled the permanent exhibition using the most modern expographic techniques.
