MEDIEVAL SUMMIT OF EREÑOZAR

MEDIEVAL SUMMIT OF EREÑOZAR

The medieval summit of San Miguel de Ereñozar is located in Ereño. Archaeological research at this site reveals a historical sequence from the Middle Ages to the present day. A necropolis dating from different stages and the remains of a castle that no longer exists are the elements that form the backbone of the site.

At the summit, crowned today by a small hermitage, visitors can relive one of the most unknown stages of Basque history. The one that speaks of times of medieval castles, of fortresses that guarded the valleys during the Middle Ages, of the way of life and religious beliefs of our ancestors.

The necropolis of lovers

Of particular note is the discovery of two stelae with a cross pattée, of which there are few examples in Bizkaia. The double burials are another of Ereñozars interesting features, which are rare at other sites.

The castle of San Miguel de Ereño

The archaeological work carried out by the Bizkaia Provincial Council and now completed is part of the overall project developed in the Study of the Castles of the Middle Ages in Bizkaia. It is not known when the castle was built. The chronicle of Alfonso XI reports that in 1334 some lords of Bizkaia, led by Juan Nuñez de Lara, took refuge in the castle of San Miguel de Ereño to resist the siege of the monarch
